How to Research a Work-At-Home Job

One of the most challenging tasks to getting a work-at-home job is determining whether or not the job announcements you’re finding are legitimate. The free job boards and many websites are filled with offers of high paying jobs that turn out to be duds or scams. The first step to any successful work-at-home job search is to weed out the good offers from the bad. Here are some tips to researching work-at-home jobs.

Keep Your Emotions in Check: One of the most important things you can do to avoid work-at-home scams is to not let your emotions get involved. Scammers are brilliant copywriters who are able to use their offers to get you excited about the prospect of paying off debt, being home with children or making tons of money in a short time. They do this because they know buying decisions are made emotionally. Therefore, keep your head in the game. Legitimate jobs don’t use hype or promise you the moon because they’re not selling anything.

Go through the scam check list: If the job asks for money to hire you or wants to sell you its own equipment or software, it’s not a job. Other scams to watch out for include envelope stuffing, assembly work, payment processing, any job asking you to use your bank account to help the company do business, email processing, rebate processing, repackaging, and any offer that uses the word “guarantee” in relation to income. Employers don’t offer guarantees; they offer a salary or a wage.

Read the job description: If you get to the end of the job announcement and you don’t know what the job entails, it’s likely not a job. Work-at-home job announcements are like traditional job announcements in which the employer gives the job title and description, a list of requirements, and instructions on how to apply.

Do your research:  Visit the company’s website, which should not be hosted on a free site (i.e. company.freehost.com). It should also be professional looking with easy to find contact information. Use a search engine to find information about the company. Type in the company’s name along with the word ‘scam’ to see if anything pops up. Visit quality work-at-home or scam forums to see if anyone has shared experiences with the company.  You can check the Better Business Bureau to see if there is any negative feedback and if so how the company responded. However, not all companies are in the Better Business Bureau and not being a member doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a scam.

Proceed through the application process with caution: Sometimes scams don’t reveal themselves until you’ve started the application process. So take each step with care. Don’t give your social security or other information that can be used to steal your identity during the hiring process (employers will eventually need your social security number, but not until they actually hire you). If you’re asked for money for anything besides a criminal history check, walk away. You should never have to give payment information for a job. Work at home jobs are just like traditional jobs, so if during your job search process you’re asked to do or provide something a traditional employer wouldn’t ask for, stop the process and assess.

Work-at-home jobs are prevalent, but so are the scams and schemes used to trick you out of your money. Protect yourself and stay focused on finding legitimate jobs by taking time to research and evaluate job announcements.

Work At Home Success Newsletter April 27, 2012

Welcome to the weekly Work-At-Home Success Newsletter with 30 new job posts, Work At Home Success Podcast, recent news, home-based opportunities and much more!

This Week’s News:

WAHS Sponsor

Profit Blog Blueprint

News From Leslie:

I was reminded yesterday about what’s really important in life and the need to be flexible when working at home. Thursdays are regularly a busy day for me, but yesterday I’d piled a lot on my to-do list. Along with the regular daily activities of posting jobs and an article on WAHS, social networking, and PR, I’d planned to write 6 400-word articles, write 3 to 4 thousand words of an 8000 word report due Friday, deal with my duties as an exchange program coordinator, and record the podcast.

After coming home from the gym, I sat down to do the podcast and was interrupted by call after call. Finally on the third interruption, I was getting pretty annoyed. I answered and my daughter was on the other end. The thing about 14-year old girls on the phone in front of their friends is that they can take forever to get to the point of their call. I was thinking she forgot her lunch or PE clothes or something. So, exasperated I let her know I was too busy for silly stuff and asked her what she needed. She said that they were on a code red at school because of a bomb threat and that she just wanted to say she loved me in case she died (don’t you love teenage drama?).

Even though I knew she was being melodramatic, I also knew that a bomb threat, while almost always nothing, was serious. I asked her if I was supposed to come get her, but she didn’t know. So I spent the next 30 minutes talking to the school district and trying to figure out if I’d even be able to pick her up. Would the police let near the school? Eventually I decided to go get them. While I felt that they were probably safe, the world is different than when I went to school. My mom-instinct told me to pick both my kids up. That took another hour because during a code red, the pick up protocol changes. Plus many other parents were there so it took forever.

Finally, I had both my kids and we were headed home. By that time I knew I wasn’t going to make a dent in my list. There was a time that I’d be tense and stressed out about that. But I’ve mellowed in my old age and realized while there might be some consequences for not getting work done, the world wouldn’t end. So I took the kids to the local bakery/coffee shop and we had a treat and talked. Now that my kids are teens, they are so busy, so it was nice to have time with them both.

When I got home, I completed one of the six articles, posted work-at-home jobs and an article on WAHS and that was it. I could have worked more last night, but Thursdays are my writer’s group, and I don’t like to miss it. That means today I’m busy again. My goal is to get this newsletter to you by 12:30 pm eastern…we’ll see if that happens. And I need to complete the 8,000 word report of which only about 300 are written. But if I’m late or don’t get it done, the world won’t end.

I have posted new upcoming events including a job teleseminar in June and my fall seminars. To see all my upcoming events, check out my events page.

Most Important “Job” In Your Home Business

If I were to ask you what was the most important “job” in running your business, what would your answer be? For most solo-entrepreneurs the answer I get is that creating the product or delivering the service is the most important job. A Realtor tells me helping clients buy or sell homes is the most important job. A direct sales rep tells me selling her products is the most important job. A freelance writer tells me writing is the most important. And so on. But they are all wrong.

Any any business, the most important job is marketing. And I’m convinced that most small and solo-person businesses that struggle, do so because they fail to see that job number one is getting the word out. That doesn’t mean that the product or service isn’t important. Obviously it is. But without clients or customers, there is no one to provide products and services to, and therefore no business.

Once you grasp the idea that marketing is crucial, you can redesign your business efforts so that it becomes part of your daily tasks. In fact, not a day should go by in which you don’t do at least one thing that lets the world know about your business whether its running an ad, calling people on the phone, writing an article or press release, etc. Marketing is not something you do once in awhile when you need clients. Its also not something you do once and sit back and wait for results. Marketing is pro-active and needs to be done every day to build and maintain a steady stream of clients and income.

If you’re not sure what to do, talk with experts in your field or get a good marketing book and create a marketing plan. Then add marketing tactics to your daily to-do list so that it becomes habit.
Below are some of my favorite marketing books for small and solo-person businesses:

The Secret to Making Money with Affiliate Programs

Work-at-home statistics in general tend to be dismal. Success in affiliate and related type marketing isn’t much different. Most people make very little money if anything at all. But what the stats fail to mention is how often failure isn’t in the method, but in the execution. Many people get roped into the idea that once they set up a website or blog, and submit it to a search engine, the money should be coming in. It doesn’t work like that. Launching the site and submitting to search engines is just the first few steps. The “work” in affiliate marketing isn’t building the site, it’s marketing it. You can have the best monetization resources, but if no one is visiting the site, you won’t make money.  So here are some quick tips and resources to make sure you have the traffic needed to earn income from a monetized site.

  1. Provide unique quality content that fits the mission or topic of the site.
  2. Optimize the site for search engines (SEO). Even just basic SEO techniques will improve your ranking in the search engines and therefore increase traffic.
  3. Create a marketing plan. You can’t rely on search engines to drive traffic to your site. Getting yourself known around the Internet increases your website exposure and well as your search engine ranking.
  4. Build a list. To increase the chance of making a sale, provide a list or newsletter. This will give you the chance to make offers to a visitor in the future. Be sure your emails aren’t only offers or readers will unsubscribe. Instead focus on informative articles or tips with an ad or two. To encourage visitors to subscribe, offer them a free report or other incentive.
  5. Monitor your results. Study your traffic using Google Analytics, the web stats tools that come with your hosting service, or a statistic plug-in for WordPress (if that’s what you’re using). Use the information to determine what sites are sending people to yours. What keywords are being used to search and find your site in the search engines? What pages are the most popular? You also want to track affiliate results. Which programs are getting the most clicks? Why is that? Is it placement? Program? Type of ad (text vs. banner)?  Many of the programs will allow to create a special tracking code so can know which ads are working where.

Companies with Telecommuting Programs

The companies on this list are pioneers in the area of telecommuting. There are large and small companies in the private and public sectors. The jobs included in the telecommuting programs are as varied as the companies themselves. This list IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE! Everyday new companies are recruiting or allowing employees to work at home. Nevertheless, this list is a resource with which you can:

  • Visit company websites to see if they have telecommuting job openings.  Please do NOT call the companies and ask about work-at-home jobs. Instead visit the websites.
  • Use the list to show your employer how prevalent telecommuting is. Along with a written work-at-home proposal, the list can convince an employer about the merits of a telecommuting program. For more information on work-at-home proposals, visit the Ask the Boss to Work-At-Home page
  • Use the list to find similar companies in your area that may have or be open to telecommuting programs.

For daily work-at-home jobs posts, check out the Work-At-Home Success Job postings. For weekly jobs, subscribe to the Work-At-Home Success Jobs and News using the subscribe form to the right. With your subscription you’ll also get some great freebies including the Jobs Online Report.

PLEASE NOTE:

1) Work-At-Home Success doesn’t guarantee that any of these companies have positions available at this time.

2) Some companies require a probation period on-site before allowing employees to telecommute.

3) Some companies still require some working on-site.

4) Some companies require employees to live within a certain distance of the office.
